Objective 26: Simplify fractions to lowest terms and use this concept to solve application problems.
Simplifying (or reducing) fractions means to make the fraction as simple as possible. Why say four-eighths (4/8) when you really mean half (1/2) ?

Proper Fractions, Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers
Objective 20: Identify and write proper and improper fractions
Objective 21: Rewrite mixed numbers as improper fraction and improper fractions as a mixed number.
If the numerator is less than the denominator, then the fraction is a PROPER FRACTION
If the numerator is more than the denominator, then the fraction is IMPROPER FRACTION

Writing Fractions
Objective 19: Use the definition of a fraction to write fractions and identify numerator and denominator.
In a fraction the "top" number is called the NUMERATOR. The bottom number is called the DENOMINATOR.
The Denominator tells you how many equal parts the whole unit is divided into.
The Numerator tells you the number of pieces that are being considered.

What is a Fraction?
Objective 19: Use the definition of a fraction to write fractions and identify numerator and denominator.
•When a whole unit is divided into equal parts, we call the parts fractions of a whole
•A whole Unit can be divided into any number of fractions, but they must be equal.
Watch the video below for an everyday example of fractions.
